Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show 2022
COMING SOON
by akas Landscape architecture + NRTH landscapes
The corner of a suburban house, sinks into water, symbolising the collapse of societal order driven by climate change and sea level rise. The display includes a neon sign perched above its roof, reading ‘Coming Soon’, a timely reminder of the current landscapes fragility. A second neon sign reads 2.6 BILLION M2, the amount of forest which will be lost worldwide over the 5 days of MIFGS 2022, the equivalent of 1 football field per second, commenting on our rapid consumption of resources. Although no longer habitable for humans, the house has become a refuge for plants, generating a new hybrid landscape. Local basalt protrudes out of the ground revealing some local geology to Melbourne.
